Overview

This module is designed to introduce the Normal anatomy and physiology of the systems of the body that are commonly affected by ilnesses necessitating Critical Care Admission. The module will also cover topics such as Acid base balance and Blood gas analysis, Fluid management in the critically ill; recognising the acutely unwell adult, shock and sepsis; professionalism and leadership and end of life care. The module will prepare the student for the next module of the programme by giving them an understanding of the normal functioning of the body before moving on to look at abnormal function.

This module may include but is not limited to professionalism/philosophy/quality/governance, critical care without walls/escalation/NEWS, costs/personal/psychological, delirium, respiratory system, Cardiovascular system, renal system, neurological system, nutrition, infection prevention, sepsis, acid base balance, ABGs, DNAR/DNACPR/pathways/end of life.

Assessment Strategy

-threshold -Basic understanding of the facts and principles specific to the topics covered in this module. Basic understanding of professional issues related to acute/critical care. Students will be required to achieve a minimum of C- in the Grading Criteria -good -Very good understanding of the facts and principles specific to the topics covered in this module and evidence of additional evidence gained by the student. Very good understanding of professional issues in acute/critical care. This equates to a minimum mark of Grade B- in the Grading Criteria -excellent -Excellent understanding of the facts and principles specific to the topics covered in this module and evidence of additional evidence gained by the student. Excellent understanding of professional issues in acute/critical care. This equates to a minimum mark of Grade A- in the Grading Criteria

Learning Outcomes

• Apply a deep and systematic understanding of normal anatomy and physiology

• Critically appraise and evaluate the management of the acutely ill patient

• Demonstrate the evaluation and synthesis required for the provision and application of evidence based practice for the acutely ill patient

• Demonstrate the synthesis and enhanced understanding of the context of acute/critical care
