Overview

The increased incidence of diabetes presents a considerable challenge to health care professionals employed in the NHS. Currently, 8% of the population (17 years and over) in Wales are known to have diabetes. It is estimated that a further 65,501 individuals have un diagnosed diabetes (PHW, 2022; Diabetes UK, 2022). Only 14.9% of people with type 2 and 30% of people with type 1 achieved the three key outcomes which are: blood glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol (WAG, 2016) . Government health departments predict that the increase in diabetes and its associated complications will significantly influence the provision of health care and substantially increase NHS expenditure.

The official predictions have led to guidance on how this increase should be managed and a core factor includes the need for health care professionals to remain well informed about diabetes mellitus and engage in continuous professional development in this sphere.

Consequently, the Diabetes Management Module is essential to ensure that those health care professionals working in the field of diabetes are fully au fait with the wealth of contemporary theoretical and practical knowledge relating to the management of the condition and its complications. This will enable them to deliver evidence-based practice when caring for this group of patients.

Assessment Strategy

-threshold -Basic understanding of the facts and principles specific to the topics covered in this module. Students will be required to achieve a minimum of C- grade in the assignment to in order to pass the theory component of the module. -good -Very good understanding of the facts and principles specific to the topics covered in this module. Good understanding of surgical care issues. This equates to a minimum mark of Grade B- in the Grading Criteria. -excellent -Excellent understanding of the facts and principles specific to the topics covered in this module and evidence of additional evidence gained by the student. Learning Outcomes

• Be fully aware of, and able to participate in, the delivery of diabetes treatment.

• Critically appraise the self-empowering philosophy and its application to diabetes care

• Critically assess the patient’s physical, psychological and socio-cultural attributes in a holistic manner and demonstrate the ability to deliver care in accordance with current evidence.

• Demonstrate a critical knowledge and understanding of the pathophysiology of the different types of diabetes and how they differ in terms of current management and the development of complications.
