Overview
This module comprises six translation workshops designed for you to achieve as broad a perspective as possible on the practice of translation in their language specialism. The module also gives you the opportunity to discuss issues in translation practice and allows them to produce translations in conditions that encourage and facilitate self-reflective practice. The module is customised to suit your language competencies, enabling you to advance their practical language skills and intercultural expertise. You will be guided towards the completion of your individual translation portfolio. Languages available include English, Welsh, German, French, Italian, Arabic, Mandarin, Galician and Spanish.

Assessment Strategy
-threshold -C- - C+: Summarizes relevant scholarship in an area; capable of recognising the most obvious counter-arguments; documents the majority of sources correctly; structures exposition and arguments clearly; provides translation choices which are apt yet loosely justified or seemingly arbitrary.
-good -B- - B+:Capable of original insights, though not always exploring or recognising their full significance; shows a critical understanding of the relevant scholarship in the field; structures exposition and arguments clearly; provides translation choices which are in correspondence with relevant theoretical/critical issues.
-excellent -A- - A+: Work presented to a standard which would be acceptable for publication in an appropriate specialist journal; demonstrates critical understanding of relevant scholarship, and places original insights in the context of that scholarship; provides original and accomplished translation choices which are attentive to theoretical/critical issues.
Learning Outcomes
- Apply theoretical and applied knowledge of translation theory and cultural context to plan and compose translations
- Students will be able to analyse the relationship between individual theories and the texts which they are translating.
- Students will engage with informed choice-making process that underlies the practice of translation and will be able to discuss their own choices with tutors and peers.
