Diagnostic Assessment Service
Our Role
We can assess students for Specific Learning Differences (SpLDs), including Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia and ADHD*. Each assessment can potentially cover all SpLDs and so do not need an assessment for each one individually. Please note that we do not assess for autism – this must be via GP referral or private assessment.
Following a diagnosis, students are eligible for university reasonable adjustments via the PLSP, and may be eligible for the Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA).
*We are able to diagnose ADD/ADHD for study purposes – eligible for PLSP adjustments and DSA. This format is widely recognised in the UK and students are advised that if they would prefer to get a medical diagnosis they can do so via GP referral or private appointment.
Students are expected to cover £100 towards the cost of the full assessment. If they cannot afford it, they are advised to contact Money Support with regards to the Hardship Fund.
Referral process
Students can self-refer by emailing assessment@bangor.ac.uk or phoning 01248 383030.
Staff can refer students – ideally by emailing assessment@bangor.ac.uk and CC the student.
Students are then asked to complete a questionnaire (free) and if the answers result in a referral for an assessment, students are emailed the link to pay £100 via the university’s online shop.
Access Centre
Our Role
We can assess students with a wide range of disabilities, e.g. SpLD, mental health, autism, medical conditions, physical impairments, sensory impairments.
Students need to have already had a diagnosis of their disability, and this needs to have been accepted for DSA (we can advise on this).
Following the assessment, students are recommended items paid through the DSA – unique to support their disability. This can take the form of human support, equipment, and/or software. The DSA does not cover any software, equipment or costs which would be expected for a non-disabled student (e.g. CAD software for a student on a CAD-based degree). DSA costs are normally paid directly to the suppliers of the support – disabled students do not benefit financially and unlike students loans are not required to repay any DSA-related costs.
Referral process
Students can self-refer by emailing access_centre@bangor.ac.uk or phoning 01248 388101.
Staff can refer students – ideally by emailing access_centre@bangor.ac.uk and CC the student.
Students are then asked to email over copies of their disability evidence as well as relevant DSA information. We normally guide the students through the process and can advise on this.
