Alistair Morris- BSc in Geography
Now works as: Procurement Intern
Now works for: RWE Innogy UK
"I completed my BSC in Geography following three very enjoyable years at Bangor. Energy had been an interest of mine from when I was at school and during the summer at the end of my first year I worked for a company called Offshore Design Engineering and this gave me my first insight into the energy sector. My dissertation examined industry perspectives towards wind energy as a replacement to fossil fuels in the UK.
"I commenced work in the Procurement Team for RWE Innogy UK as an intern. RWE Innogy UK is the UK subsidiary of RWE Innogy, which pools the renewable expertise of the RWE Group across Europe. I have already had the chance to get out on site in both mid Wales and Scotland to visit onshore wind farms and hydro projects.
"I am based within the offshore development team and work alongside other procurement colleagues in looking into new project opportunities as well as assisting with the valuation of tenders and supporting operational project teams to place contracts with external providers for goods and services. Although the title of my role is “intern” my position is very much part of the team and it is a great way to earn experience within the industry! I am enjoying the responsibility and variety of my role.
"Geography is such a broad subject area – it provides opportunities to look at a wide variety of different areas or become more specific. The course at Bangor gave me the opportunity to study a variety of modules and increased my interest in the renewable energy in particular and partly contributed to me wanting to work within this sector. I also found the lecturers very friendly and approachable which I think is a very important aspect of your course experience.
"Bangor is also great if you are into outdoor pursuit as it is located close to the Snowdonia National Park! Being a surfer I thoroughly enjoyed being so close to the coast! For me it was a brilliant location to study."
