Watch - Ffriddoedd Village Tour
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION]ÌýThe student is standing in the middle of Ffriddoedd Village. They are standing on the path with fencing, greenery, and accommodation buildings in the background. There is a sign behind them that reads ‘Ffriddoedd: Bar Uno Café Bar, Shop, Halls Office, Mail Room, Security’.
[AVA]Ìý±á±ð±ô±ô´Ç. Welcome to Ffriddoedd Village. My name is Ava, and I'm going to show you what it's like to live here.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION]ÌýThere are three clips on the screen at the same time. The first clip shows two students playing pool in the JMJ Common Room, the second clip shows a student walking the paths through Ffriddoedd, and the third clip shows the same student inside one of the accommodation rooms.
[AVA]ÌýSo I guess the first thing you need to know is that some people call it Ffridd.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION] The scene changes back to the student standing in the middle of Ffriddoedd village with fencing, greenery, and signage in the background. The student is walking the paths through Ffriddoedd Village with benches, fencing, greenery, and a Campus Life poster attached to the fencing in the background.
[AVA]ÌýFfridd is in a great location in Upper Bangor.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION]ÌýTwo students are standing in Upper Bangor in front of a restaurant/bar. Multi-coloured decorations are hanging from the roof of the entrance. One student is pointing towards the decorations while the other student looks up.
[AVA]ÌýIt's a really popular student area.ÌýFfridd is only three minutes away from the first teaching building.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION] A sign is shown on the screen that reads ‘The Vintage Shop’. The two students are looking through the window of ‘The Vintage Shop’. One student is looking through the window and pointing at an item in the window, whilst the second student is looking at the same item. In the background, there are other shops, people, and traffic.
[AVA]ÌýThis one is for healthcare science, and medical subjects.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION]ÌýThe student is standing outside, leaning against a wall with buildings, cars, and greenery in the background, as well as a sign that reads ‘Fron Heulog’.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION]ÌýStudents seeing to a medical dummy in the University Ward simulation room.
[AVA]Ìýbut don’t worry, the others aren't that far.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION] Two students walking through Ffriddoedd Village chatting to each other.
[AVA]ÌýOnly a minute away from Fron Heulog is the closest supermarket.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION]ÌýThe student is standing on the pavement close to a roundabout. The student points to a ‘Morrisons’ sign across the road.
[AVA]ÌýThis is the famous Glanrafon Hill, often referred to by its nickname, which we can't really say on camera.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION] The student is standing on the top of a road. To the left, is Morrisons, and to the right is a contractor van and flats.
[AVA]ÌýAt the bottom, only a 10-minute walk away, is Pontio and Academi, which is one of the student nightclubs.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION] Two students walking down the stairs in Pontio surrounded by modern white walls and artwork. Academi Bangor snapchat QR code on the wall in Academi. Students dancing and partying in Academi nightclub.
[AVA]ÌýSo many pubs within a 10-minute walk.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION] DJ wearing bright green headphones DJ'ing at Academi. The student is standing outside a local pub called ‘Y Glôb’. They are pointing up at the sign that reads ‘Tafarn y Glôb’.
[AVA]ÌýWe're a 15-minute walk to the Main Arts Building on College Road.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION]ÌýThe student is standing in the ‘Outer Quad’ near the Main Arts Building on campus. They stretch their arms out to their side.
[AVA]ÌýThere are plenty of living options here at Ffridd.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION]ÌýThe student is walking another path in an area of Ffriddoedd Village and is surrounded by accommodation buildings grass and trees.
[AVA] All rooms are en-suites, even the budget ones. You've got the modern halls which all have a lift to each floor.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION]ÌýThe student is sitting outside one accommodation building on a bench.
[AVA]ÌýThese are the classic halls.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION]ÌýThe student is standing outside an accessible flat door in the ‘Cefn-y-Coed’ building. They knock on the door and are let into the flat by the resident. They walk into the flat and to the left into the resident’s bedroom.
[AVA] Unfortunately, there are no lifts and they're also considered as budget halls. This is Bar Uno, it's a bar, coffee shop and cafe and every weekday a bargain meal is served here which is fantastic. It's also a great place to meet your friends or socialise or hang out. This is the shop.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION] The student is standing outside the village shop that is situated at the centre of the student village. They raise their hands to show the shop sign. The student stands outside one of the village Launderettes.
[AVA]ÌýThere's a laundrette here and here.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION] The clip changes to a second launderette on site. The student is standing outside of the building, they show the sign to the building, walk to the entrance, and enter the building using their student card. The student is standing outside the village common room which is next to the village shop. The sign that is attached to the brick building wall reads ‘common room’ and the door to the left is clear with a ‘Campus Life’ sticker attached.
[AVA]ÌýHere's the common room. It's a great place to work as well as meet your friends.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION]ÌýInside the common room, the two students are playing foosball. In the background, there is a piano, tables, study tables, chairs, and sofas.
[AVA]ÌýThis is Canolfan Brailsford gym and sports centre.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION]ÌýThe student is standing outside ‘Brailsford Gym and Sports Hall’. There are signs above the doors that read ‘Sport Bangor’ and to the left that include the opening times.
[AVA]ÌýHere you'll find a weightlifting area, squash court, sports Dome, climbing wall, sports hall, and large gym.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION]ÌýA clip of people in Platform 81, which is part of the gym, working out and lifting weights. A clip of a person using the climbing wall. The student is standing outside ‘Brailsford Gym and Sports Hall’. There are signs above the doors that read ‘Sport Bangor’ and to the left that include the opening times.ÌýA sweeping scene of two modern halls in Ffriddoedd Village.
[AVA]ÌýYour card gets you into your building, flat and room.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION]ÌýThe student is standing outside a light brown wooden flat door. The sign on the door reads ‘D001 – D008’. The student uses their student card to enter the flat.
[AVA]ÌýThis is a standard kitchen in Ffriddoedd with plenty of space to cook, eat and socialise.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION] Once inside the flat, the student is standing in the kitchen. The dining table is dressed with dishes, and apples in a bowl as a centerpiece in the background, and there are storage pots, an oven, a wok, and windows. There is also a poster on the wall from ‘Campus Life’ that is a calendar of all the available events. 5 students socialising around the dining table at a standard Kitchen in Ffriddoedd, with one student cooking behind them. Student is standing in the middle of the kitchen.
[AVA]ÌýEach kitchen is equipped with a cooker, fridge-freezer, toaster, microwave, kettle, Hoover, and ironing board.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION]ÌýThe student is kneeling next to a kitchen cupboard. They grab the handle and open the cupboard.
[AVA]ÌýEach person gets a cupboard, shelf in the fridge and a shelf in the freezer.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION]ÌýThe student stands to the left of two fridge-freezers. They put their hand on top of one of the fridge freezers.
[AVA]ÌýStudents are responsible for cleaning their own room and you need to keep the shared areas tidy.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION]ÌýStudents sit on the comfy sofas in the kitchen, chatting to each other.
[AVA] Cleaners come in once a week, but they won't wash your dishes, they'll clean the sinks and surfaces and they'll mop the floors.vYour rubbish and recycling bins will be emptied once a week.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION]ÌýRemaining in the flat, the student is standing inside one of the bedrooms. In the scene, there is a bed, desk, desk chair, shelving, and wardrobe.
[AVA]ÌýWhether you're in a room this size
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION]ÌýWithin the same flat, the student shows a larger bedroom available in some flats. They stand in the middle of the room and stretch out their arms to show the size of the room. There is a bed, desk, desk chair, shelving, and a wardrobe in the room.
[AVA]Ìýor this size, you will get a single bed, internet connection, a desk and a chair, a bookshelf, a waste bin, wardrobe, and storage under the bed.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION] The student remains in the larger room and is sitting on the bed as they speak. The student sits on a desk chair by the desk with a laptop and Campus Life reusable coffee cup.ÌýThe camera zooms into shelving and then to a bin in the rooms, and the student’s hand is pointing to both. The student is standing to the left of the wardrobe and opens the door, then moves on to the under-bed storage. The student pulls out the drawers from under the bed. Moving to the en-suite, the student stands to the left of the door with their hand on the handle. They open the door to show the inside. In the background, there is a sink, toilet, shower curtain, and some toiletries on the shelving on the wall.
[AVA] This is the en-suite. You'll have to buy a TV license if you intend on watching live TV, but you can bring a games console.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION] The student is sitting on the bed with a laptop on their lap. The student is standing next to a notice board that is fixed to the wall above the desk and under the shelving. The student points to the notice board and the posters secured to it. The shelving above the notice board has some home décor accessories, and there is a poster on the wall in the background.
[AVA] Remember to bring your own bedding. You can put posters up here to make it feel nice and homely but remember to check the website to see what you can't bring.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION]ÌýThe student is stood in front of accommodation buildings specifically for healthcare students. There are buildings, parked cars, greenery, and trees in the background.
[AVA]ÌýThese are specially allocated halls for healthcare students as they run on different schedules to most students and they're also budget halls.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION]ÌýThe student is stood outside a blue door and knocks on the door. Another student opens the door and they both walk through the corridor and into a bedroom.
[AVA] There are lots of accessible rooms here in Ffriddoedd. Let's go and have a look in Abi's room.
[ABI]Ìý±á±ð±ô±ô´Ç
[AVA] Hi
[AVA] So Abi, how did you go about securing an accessible room?
[ABI] Well it was quite easy to be honest. Once I got my original offer through from the University on results day, they stated ‘do you need an accessible room?’
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION]ÌýThe student and the resident are in the bedroom. The student is leaning against a desk near a window, that has plans and stuffed animals. The resident stands to the student’s right next to language posters and a computer.
[ABI]ÌýBecause on UCAS I stated I have a disability and from there, halls got in touch with me and gave me all the steps.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION] A sweeping clip of the room from left to right. In the room there is a bed, a bedside table with a photo and a water bottle, then there is a large worktop under the window with stuffed animals and the student and resident are standing to the right of the room. To the right of the room, there is a desk with a laptop and tablet, shelving and photos, lights, and posters hanging on the wall. A clip of the resident sitting at their desk. They are sitting on a desk chair, with their hands on the keyboard looking at the laptop screen. They are surrounded by personal photos, trinkets, lights, and posters.
[ABI]ÌýI've been in this room for three years now, so halls have been very accommodating for me, letting me keep all my equipment over the summer holidays.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION]ÌýThe scene returns to the student and resident, leaning against the workspace in front of the window. The laptop screen and posters on the wall can be seen to the right of the resident.
[ABI]ÌýSo yeah, they’ve been really accommodating.
[AVA]ÌýThe bathroom is also accessible.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION]ÌýThe student is standing next to a door within the room. They put their hand on the handle and open the door to show the accessible en-suite.
[AVA]ÌýThis button allows you to call security 24/7.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION] The clip is zoomed into an alarm on the wall of the accessible room with the student’s hand pointing to a red button that reads ‘CALL’ and a green button that reads ‘RESET’. The student stands behind a sign that reads ‘Neuadd John Morris-Jones’. In the background, parked cars can be seen outside two accommodation buildings.
[AVA] This is Neuadd John Morris Jones. These are dedicated to Welsh speakers and learners. Each bedroom is en-suite.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION]ÌýThe student is standing outside a light blue flat door. The student knocks on the door and is let into the flat by a resident of the flat.
[AVA] There are shared kitchens, a lift to each floor, and there's a very sociable common room. Let's take a look inside.
[SIRIOL] Hiya, Croeso, come in.
[AVA] Hello.
[AVA] So why do people choose to live in JMJ?
[SIRIOL]ÌýTo be a part of a Welsh community.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION]ÌýThe student and the resident are sat around a dining table in the flat’s kitchen. In the background, there are kitchen cupboards, a microwave, and a large window to the right.
[SIRIOL]Also it's like a home away from home.
[AVA] Is that your favourite thing about living here?
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION] hand re-arranging red and yellow pool balls in a triangle on a pool table. Two students are in the JMJ Common Room playing pool. Student 1 is taking a shot with the pool cue whilst Student 2 is standing in the background holding the pool cue and watching Student 1.
[SIRIOL] I'd say for me it would be the Welsh Union.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION] From a different angle, the two students continue to play pool. In the background, there is a dart board, chairs, and writing on the wall that reads ‘Cofiwch Dryweryn’ and writing on a board near the window that reads ‘Y Glôb’. The camera zooms into a red UMCB t-shirt that reads ‘Eisteddfod Ryng-Golegol Bangor 2017’.
[SIRIOL] We do a lot together, trips and nights out and sober events as well.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION] The camera zooms into a second red UMCB t-shirt that reads ‘Eisteddfod Ryng-Golegol Bangor 2022’. The scene changes back to the two students sitting in the kitchen of the flat in JMJ. They are looking at each other while talking.
[SIRIOL]ÌýIt's just nice to have that sort of family.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION]ÌýThe student is standing in the kitchen. In the background, there are kitchen cupboards, appliances, an oven, a sink, and some dishes.
[AVA] So this is a typical budget flat, and you get what you find in a normal student kitchen. Let's take a look at a typical budget room.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION]ÌýThe student is standing in front of a green door with a sign that reads ‘Z716’. They have their hand on the handle, and they enter the room. Once in the room, the students spread their arms to their sides to show the room. There is a desk, desk chair, bed, and shelving in the room.
[AVA]ÌýSounds good so far, here's a little bit more information.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION] An aerial clip of the Ffriddoedd Student Village. Bangor can be seen in the background, as well as the Menai Straits and the pier. Another aerial clip of the student village from a different angle. The astroturf can be seen.
[AVA] The contract is approximately 42 weeks for undergraduates and approximately 51 weeks for postgraduates. Your fees pay for your room, your basic contents insurance, all utility bills, Wi-Fi, gym, and the Campus Life membership.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION] A clip of the two students in the JMJ flat kitchen. They are sitting on the dining table holding mugs, facing each other. To the left, there are recycling bins and a large window with a lovely view of the Menai Straits and Anglesey, and to the right, there are appliances, cupboards, and an oven. From a different angle, the two students are sat on the kitchen dining table looking out the window at the lovely view of the Menai Straits and Anglesey. A clip of the student and a Campus Crew member sitting next to each other on a red sofa, they are talking and laughing.
[AVA]ÌýChristie is one of the Campus Crew members.
[AVA]ÌýAnd can you tell us a bit more about what Campus Life does?
[CHRISTIE] Yeah, we put on free events for students so that they can have fun, meet people, and destress. So for example, we put on quiz nights and things in the common room.
[AVA]ÌýThis is the Hall's office where you can collect your post and report any maintenance issues.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION]ÌýFrom inside the Halls office, the student is standing in front of the reception where a student has their back to the host student speaking to the staff member.
[AVA] You can't keep your bike in your room. Luckily there are bike sheds dotted all around site and it only costs £20 for a year and you can even buy this key before you arrive at Uni.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION]ÌýThe student stands in front of a bike shed. The bike shed is a metal, green shed with weatherproof plastic and has a lock on the gate. There are also bikes inside.
[AVA]ÌýI've always found Ffriddoedd to feel really safe.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION]ÌýThe student stands outside of the security building to the right of a sign that reads ‘Security’.
[AVA]ÌýThey have 24-hour security and they have an office right in the middle of the site.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION]ÌýA close-up of the student as they speak. There are foliage, greenery, and buildings in the background.
[AVA] There are also mentors that live in halls. These are non-first year students that can help with any problems you may have from noisy neighbours to messy flatmates. If you do bring a car, you'll need to apply for a parking permit.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION]ÌýA closer aerial clip of the Student Village.
[AVA] There are a limited number of spaces at our accommodation sites, but the best thing about Bangor is that everything's within walking distance. Really hope you've enjoyed the tour today.
[VISUAL DESCRIPTION]ÌýThe student is sitting on a bench in the centre of the student village. In the background, there are two outdoor table tennis tables, trees, and Bar Uno.
