Safe Use of Lifting Equipment
As you may be aware, the use of 'Lifting Equipment' at the University is controlled through health and safety legislation, in particular by the 'Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998' (LOLER). Within the LOLER regulations there is a statutory requirement to periodically inspect and test all lifting equipment - this is also a requirement of the University Insurers.
In order to ensure that all relevant items of equipment are 'tested and inspected' in accordance with statutory requirements each Department is required to provide details of each item of 'lifting equipment' held or used by it. Details of Serial Numbers, Make, Description and Location must be included.
In order to aid the identification of lifting equipment examples are listed below:
- Cranes
- Forklift Trucks
- Hydraulic Working Platforms
- Ropes and Pulleys
- Block and Tackle
- Ropes and Slings used for lifting
- Lifting Shackles
- Trolley Jacks
- Dumb Waiters
- Lifting Chains
- Bottle Jacks
- Platform Trucks
- Pallet Trucks
Every item of lifting equipment must be logged with the University Insurance Officer and be formally examined at set intervals by a Competent Engineer (arranged via the Insurance Officer).
