This is a 4-year course designed specifically for students who want to gain a really in-depth understanding of the subject. During the first three years, you will follow an same degree course structure as for Marine Biology and Zoology BSc. At the end of Year two, providing a satisfactory mark has been obtained, you continue with Year three of the BSc course and proceed to a 4th year specialised course. In the fourth year you will carry out a substantial piece of research which forms your final year dissertation. You will be able to work in a staff member’s research group and will gain valuable research experience of working in a research environment.

The Marine Biology element of this course covers animals, seaweeds, plants and microbial life in the seas and their interactions. The Zoology element covers all animals whether on land or in water. This degree therefore gives a wide overview of the diversity of animal life and ecosystems on this planet, ranging from the mountains to the deep sea trenches. On this course you will learn how interactions between animals and their environments apply equally to marine, terrestrial and freshwater habitats. You will be introduced to the fundamentals of biology, ecology, and evolution of marine organisms and all animal groups. We also cover more applied aspects such as aquaculture and fisheries, parasitology and immunology.

Additional Course Options

The first 3 years of this degree involves attending lectures, practical classes and fieldwork on the shore. In Year three there are two field courses, each a week long, and during Years 1, 2 and 3 time is spent aboard the research ship Prince Madog. Your practical work will be continually assessed and there are written examinations for each module. In Year four you will be assessed on the research skills dissertation, seminar and poster modules.

• We have tropical marine and temperate marine aquaria, analytical laboratories, flow and particle transport simulators and computing capabilities.
• We have unrivalled local access to the ocean and numerous intertidal habitats for undertaking experimental work, including rocky shores, sandy shores and saltmarshes.
• If you are interested in diving then the Students Union have a very active Diving Society which many of our students join.

• The cost of a full-time undergraduate course is £9,250 per year (2025/26).
• The fee for all integrated study abroad years is  £1,385 (2025/26).

Additional Costs
There are also some common additional costs that are likely to arise for students on all courses, for example:

• If you choose to study abroad or take the International Experience Year as part of your course.
• If you attend your Graduation Ceremony, there will be a cost for gown hire (£25-£75) and cost for additional guest tickets (c.£12 each).

Course-specific additional costs
Depending on the course you are studying, there may be additional course-specific costs that you will be required to meet. These fall into three categories:

1. Mandatory Costs: these are related to a particular core or compulsory module that you’ll be required to complete to achieve your qualification e.g. compulsory field trips, uniforms for students on placement, DBS Check.
2. Necessarily Incurred Costs: these may not be experienced by all students, and will vary depending on the course e.g. professional body membership, travel to placements, specialist software, personal safety equipment.
3. Optional Costs: these depend on your choice of modules or activity and they are shown to give you an indication of the optional costs that may arise to make sure your choice is as informed as possible. These can include graduation events for your course, optional field trips, Welcome Week trips.

Â鶹´«Ã½¸ßÇå°æ offers International Incorporated Bachelor Degrees for International students whose High School qualification is not equivalent to the UK school leaving qualification. The first year (or Year 0) is studied at Â鶹´«Ã½¸ßÇå°æ International College, an embedded College on our University campus and delivered by Oxford International Education Group.

This course is ideal preparation for a career in research. The fourth year project will allow you to gain experience of working in a research environment and prepare you for a PhD and research career.
