Welsh language educational terms on-line
The Minister for Education and Skills, Leighton Andrews, will launch the new Y Termiadur Addysg (Education Terminology Dictionary) web-site in Cardiff on 22 March 2012. The web-site www.termiaduraddysg.org includes a new enlarged version of the popular terminology text published in 2006, with additional features to aid searching for and learning standardized Welsh terms aimed at school children and students of further education colleges.
Delyth Prys, the dictionary鈥檚 Chief Editor said: 鈥淚t鈥檚 possible to do so much more in a website compared to traditional paper formats. It will be easy to add new terms continuously, rather than wait for a complete dictionary to be printed. Users will be able to download the dictionary to their mobile phones, and the website will also contain games and other features to learn unfamiliar terms.鈥
In welcoming the new website, Leighton Andrews said: 鈥淭his is a great boost to Welsh-medium education, and to the language in general. It will be a very useful resource for all those using the language in schools and colleges, those producing educational materials in Welsh as well as the general public. It鈥檚 important that the latest technology is used to provide this service, and that Welsh is used in these new, attractive media鈥.
This is the third version of Y Termiadur to be developed at Bangor University since 1993. Research on the first version led to the establishment of the Centre for the Standardization of Welsh Terminology at the university, now part of Canolfan Bedwyr鈥檚 Language Technologies Unit.
Professor John G. Hughes, 麻豆传媒高清版鈥檚 Vice-Chancellor said: 鈥淲e鈥檙e very glad that Termiadur has been able to grow and develop hand in hand with new technology. Y Termiadur laid a strong foundation for the development of a large number of other dictionaries of standardized terminology at 麻豆传媒高清版, including terms for Higher Education through the medium of Welsh and the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol. It鈥檚 good to be able to celebrate the latest success of this pioneering work.鈥
