The School of Education offers full-time and part-time opportunities to study for the PhD and MPhil degrees. The study may be through the medium of Welsh or English. Specialist research areas in the School of Education include:
- Welsh-medium education
- Bilingual education
- Language and literacy
- Science education
- Post-compulsory education
- Mentoring
- School effectiveness
- Special Educational Needs / Additional Learning Needs
While the specialist research areas listed above are typically the ones where expert research supervision can be provided, other curriculum areas may be possible.
A PhD typically takes three years full-time and five or six years part-time. An EdD also typically takes three years full-time and five or six years part-time and consists of six taught modules and a thesis. The MPhil degree is usually completed in two years full-time and three or four years part-time. There are no specific School of Education courses or modules that are taken when completing a research degree. However, the University offers skills modules (e.g. in statistical analysis or the use of computers) for all its PhD and MPhil students.
Applications are invited from all those who have good first degrees, irrespective of discipline. Those with a Masters degree are normally exempted from the probationary year.
