Research Interests
My area of research interest lies in the investigation of future climate and environmental change on both environmental and human systems. My current research looks to investigate the impacts of a range of future climate change scenarios on the hydrological regime of rivers across Great Britain, before looking at the consequences of such change on the production of hydropower. I also have a broad interest in natural resource exploitation and management, particularly in relation to the complex interactions of environmental nexuses, with my research thus far being primarily focused on the water-energy nexus.
During the course of my PhD research I quantified changes in historical hydroclimatic data for catchments in Wales, as well as established a relationship between daily weather conditions and total water demand for public water supply. In addition, using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) I assessed the impact of a worst-case scenario of future global greenhouse emissions, and therefore climate change, on streamflow and water quality for catchments in Wales. The results of this study were then used to assess the availability of water for both public water supply and hydropower generation in the catchments studied. I expanded the scope of my research during my postdoctoral role, widening focus to the wider Great Britain, with a focus on hydropower generation under climate change.

This work, undertaken as part of the non-financial support obligations of the Dŵr Uisce Project, saw the completion of hydrological modelling to aid with the identification of key areas of the Afon Leri catchment to target for future natural flood risk management measures. In addition, an investigation of the impact of tree planting on average and peak flows in the catchment was completed. A report, titled Sub-basin contributions to peak flows at Talybont in the Afon Leri catchment, and the potential impact of tree planting on streamflow, was produced detailing the results of the hydrological modelling. A summary of the report was also orally presented to key group stakeholders.
The keys aims of the work were to:
• Identify the main sub-basins/areas of the catchment that contribute to peak flow events, using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) hydrological model.• Investigate the impact of tree planting as a form of natural flood risk management (NFRM), to reduce peak flows in key areas of the catchment, using the Land Use Change SWAT+ Toolkit (LUCST).• Indicate sub-basins/areas of the catchment to target for future NFRM investigation/study.• Provide next steps to the flood group in terms of further investigation of NFRM upstream of Talybont.Â1 Apr 2022 – 12 May 2022
