I have an extensive background in mathematics education having taught, inspected and worked as a consultant in the secondary sector in both England and Wales.
As a teacher I taught mathematics in London and North Wales as a mainstream teacher and head of department. At Ysgol Morgan Llwyd, I became involved in teacher enquiry projects financed by the GTCW and led projects on cross curricular work with Geography (which became the subject of a WG video on good practice) and implemented CAME mathematics.
Subsequently, in association with , I authored secondary homework materials for the homework project, prepared extensive teaching resources for the and contributed to the Assessing Pupils' Progress in mathematics for QCA. I also wrote , a series of statistics activities commissioned by WG (ACCAC) and the Illuminate (secondary) and Wondermaths (primary) learning packs for More Able and Talented Learners.
I have always been a keen advocate of ICT in mathematics education, including handheld technology and dynamic geometry and have worked with Texas Instruments, providing workshops for their as well as training teachers in North Wales in .
In my present role as the PGCE secondary mathematics tutor I have been able to develop the above interests as well as keeping abreast of current developments in mathematics education, being a member of the BSRLM, BERA and the ATM.
In addition, I was involved with the from its inception and, as a result, developed partnerships with colleagues at other universities (UCL-IOE, Cardiff, and Aberystwyth), provided mentor training across the whole of Wales and supervised teachers with their own classroom research, specialising in small scale inquiry within an action research methodology. Subjects supervised include numeracy, literacy, inclusion and the development of problem based learning in science
My research profile has involved supervising students on the MA course investigating More Able and Talented pupils which led to an invitation lecture to the in Nigeria and currently I am supervising the research of girls’ maths anxiety in secondary schools.
My own personal research has included an evaluation of lesson observation feedback to PGCE students and I am currently investigating the role of the literacy coordinator in developing literacy across the curriculum in secondary schools whilst studying for my EdD (preliminary findings were presented at ).
