Overview
Addysg a Chyflogaeth Fe'm haddysgwyd ym Mhrifysgolion Leeds, Caerdydd a Harvard, ac enillais raddau ym meysydd Athroniaeth a Saesneg (BA), Cymraeg (MPhil) ac Astudiaethau Celtaidd (PhD). Rwyf wedi cael fy nghyflogi听 fel gan brifysgolion yng Ngwlad Pwyl (Lublin), Iwerddon (Gaillimh), UDA (Harvard) a Chymru (Bangor), ac wedi darlithio'n achlysurol neu addysgu ar ysgolion haf mewn sefydliadau ledled Ewrop a Gogledd America. Ymchwil Rwy'n gweithio ar draws cyfnodau a disgyblaethau, gan ddwyn athroniaeth a theori lenyddol i ddeialog 芒 llenyddiaeth fodern a chanoloesol Cymru ac Iwerddon. Pwysig i鈥檙 gwaith hwn hefyd ydy theori amlieithrwydd a chyfieithu. Gweler yn enwedig fy monograff,听Darogan..., a hefyd fy erthygl yn听Translation Studies,听9. Yn ddiweddar mae fy ngwaith ymchwil wedi bod yn troi o gwmpas dau brif faes, sef athroniaeth yr ugeinfed ganrif (yn enwedig ffigyrau megis Martin Heidegger, Maurice Blanchot, Martin Buber, Jacques Derrida) a llenyddiaeth Gymraeg y canol oesoedd. Digwyddiad pwysig sy'n clymu'r meysydd hyn ynghyd yw cyfieithiad Martin Buber o Bedair Cainc y Mabinogi yn 1914, ac rwyf wedi bod yn edrych ar y croes-ffrwythloni cysyniadol rhwng y chwedlau Cymraeg a'r traddodiadau dyneiddiol-Hasidig.听Gweler fy erthygl yn听Ysgrifau Beirniadol听34 ar hyn. Rwyf hefyd yn edrych yn agos ar gysyniadau o amser, cronoleg a hanesyddiaeth yn ll锚n ganoloesol y Gymraeg a'r Wyddeleg. Mae'r brosiect hon yn archwilio nid yn unig nodweddion megis y deictig ond hefyd y ffyrdd y mae ffurfiau llenyddol a throsiadau rhethregol yn mynegi profiadau cysyniadol (ac anghysyniadol) o amser, lle, tragwyddoldeb a'r iwtopig.听Gweler fy erthygl yn听Proceedings of the Harvard Celtic Colloquium, 38. Cyflwyno a Siarad Cyhoeddus Rwyf wedi traddodi ystod o bapurau mewn cynadleddau o orllewin Romania i dde Califfornia (ac yn y rhan fwyaf o鈥檙 gwledydd rhyngddynt): siaradaf gan fwyaf ar lenyddiaeth Gymraeg a Gwyddeleg (ganoloesol a modern), ond hefyd ar athroniaeth, ac astudiaethau diwylliannol yn ehangach. Byddaf yn mwynhau cyflwyno mewn digwyddiadau cyhoeddus, o neuaddau pentref a chanolfannau celfyddydol i'r cyfryngau cenedlaethol neu'r Eisteddfod Genedlaethol. ac mae fy ngwaith fel athro iaith (Cymraeg, Pwyleg, Gwyddeleg) hefyd yn fodd o gysylltu 芒鈥檙 gymuned leol ac ehangach. Rwyf yn siarad a darlithio mewn nifer o ieithoedd (y Gymraeg yn bennaf ond hefyd Saesneg a Phwyleg). Cyfieithu Llenyddol Fe'm comisynwyd droeon gan 糯yl Farddoniaeth Ryngwladol Gogledd Cymru i gyfieithu, darllen a thrafod barddoniaeth yn y Bwyleg ac ieithoedd eraill o ddwyrain Ewrop. Fe'm comisiynwyd hefyd gan Gyfnewidfa Llenyddiaeth Cymru i gyfieithu rhyddiaith Bwyleg. Cyhoeddais amryw gyfieithiadau o'r Wyddeleg i'r Gymraeg. Fe'm cymhwyswyd drwy arholiad ar gyfer aelodaeth o Gymdeithas Cyfieithwyr Cymru (Cym-Saes; Saes-Cym). Addysgu Ar y cyrsiau BA, dysgaf sgiliau iaith a llythrennedd (Cymraeg a Gwyddeleg) yn ogystal 芒 llenyddiaeth, hanes llenyddiaeth, ac athroniaeth. Rwy'n cyfrannu'n gyson hefyd i fodiwlau a gaiff eu cyd-addysgu, a鈥檙 rheiny鈥檔 amrywio o lenyddiaeth ganoloesol a modern cynnar i ieithyddiaeth, sosioiethyddiaeth a chynllunio ieithyddol. Fi yw sylfeinydd a chyfarwyddwr y cwrs MA 'Y Celtiaid', a byddaf yn cyfrannu at ddysgu ar gyrsiau MA eraill ar draws yr Ysgol a'r Coleg. Rwy'n hapus i drafod prosiectau PhD mewn meysydd perthnasol. |
Education and Employment I studied at Leeds, Cardiff and Harvard Universities, gaining degrees in Philosophy and English (BA), Welsh (MPhil) and Celtic Studies (PhD). I have been Lecturer, Senior Lecturer or Associate Professor at universities in Poland (Lublin), Ireland (Galway), USA (Harvard) and Wales (Bangor), and lectured or taught on summer schools in many other organizations across Europe and North America. Research I work across a number of periods and disciplines, bringing philosophy and literary theory into dialogue with the modern and medieval literatures of Wales and Ireland. Theories of translation theory and multilingualism are central here. See especially my monograph,听Darogan: Prophecy, Lament and Absent Heroes in Medieval Welsh Literature (2013), and also my article in听Translation Studies,听9. Recently, my research has been moving in two main areas: the philosophy of the twentieth century (especially figures such as Martin Heidegger, Maurice Blanchot, Martin Buber, Jacques Derrida, J.R. Jones) and medieval Welsh literature. A central event that brings these threads together is Martin Buber's translation of the Four Branches of the Mabinogi (Die vier Zweige des Mabinogi) in 1914, and I have been looking at conceptual cross-fertilization between the Welsh legends and humanist-Hasidic traditions: see my article in听Ysgrifau Beirniadol 34. I am also looking at concepts of time, temporality and historiography in medieval Welsh and Irish literature. This project explores not only features such as the deictic but also the ways in which literary forms and rhetorical tropes express conceptual (and aconceptual) experiences of time, place, timelessness and the utopian. See my article in听Proceedings of the Harvard Celtic Colloqium,听38. Presentations and Public Speaking I have delivered a range of papers in conferences from western Romania to southern California (and most countries in-between): I speak mainly on Welsh and Irish literature (medieval and modern), but also on philosophy and wider cultural studies. I enjoy presenting at public events, from village halls and arts centres to national broadcast media or the National Eisteddfod, and my work as a language teacher (Welsh, Polish, Irish) is also a means of engaging with the local and wider community. I speak and lecture in a number of languages 鈥嬧(mainly Welsh but also English and Polish). Literary Translation I have been commissioned regularly by the North Wales International Poetry Festival to translate, read and discuss poetry in Polish and other Eastern European languages. I have also been commissioned by the Welsh Literature Exchange to translate Polish prose, and I have published a number of translations from Irish to Welsh. Teaching On BA modules, I teach language and literacy skills (Welsh and Irish) as well as literature, literary history and philosophy. I also contribute regularly to co-taught modules, ranging from early medieval and medieval literature to linguistics, sociolinguistics and language-planning. I am the co-ordinator of 'The Celts' MA, and I contribute to the teaching on other MA courses across the School and the College. I am happy to discuss PhD proposals in suitable fields.听 |

Research Interests
Rwy'n ymchwilio i lenyddiaethau'r ieithoedd Celtaidd yn gyffredinol (Cymraeg a Gwyddeleg yn arbennig), ac mae gennyf hefyd ddiddordeb mawr mewn Llenyddiaeth Gymharol, yn enwedig yng nghyd-destun diwylliannau llai Ewrop a'r ieithoedd Slafeg (y Bwyleg yn arbennig). Yn fy ymchwil fy hun a'm goruchwylio mae gennyf ddiddordeb neilltuol mewn gwaith ac iddo ogwydd theoretig: mae fy ymchwil (gw. manylion cyhoeddiadau a chynadleddau) yn ymwneud 芒 disgyrsiau sydd ar y ffin rhwng ffiloleg ac athroniaeth iaith/celf (e.e., proffwydoliaeth, amlieithrwydd, cyfieithu, barddoneg ac estheteg, ac ecofeirniadaeth).听 Yn ddiweddar mae fy ngwaith ymchwil wedi bod yn troi o gwmpas dau brif faes, sef athroniaeth yr ugeinfed ganrif (yn enwedig meddylwyr megis听Martin Heidegger, Maurice Blanchot, Martin Buber, Jacques Derrida, J.R. Jones) a llenyddiaeth Gymraeg y canol oesoedd (barddoniaeth a rhyddiaith). Digwyddiad pwysig sy'n clymu'r meysydd hyn ynghyd yw cyfieithiad Martin Buber o Bedair Cainc y Mabinogi yn 1914, ac rwyf wedi bod yn edrych ar y croes-ffrwythloni cysyniadol rhwng y chwedlau Cymraeg a'r traddodiadau dyneiddiol-Hasidig. Rwyf erbyn hyn yn edrych yn benodol ar gysyniadau o amser, cronoleg a hanesyddiaeth yn ll锚n ganoloesol y Gymraeg a'r Wyddeleg. Mae'r prosiect diweddaraf hwn yn archwilio nid yn unig agweddau megis y deictig ond hefyd y ffyrdd y mae ffurfiau llenyddol a throsiadau rhethregol yn mynegi profiadau cysyniadol (ac anghysyniadol) o amser, lle, tragwyddoldeb ac iwtopia. Rwyf wrthi hefyd yn paratoi cyflwyniad hygyrch i Athroniaeth Llenyddiaeth, i'w gyhoeddi ar ffurf llyfr. Hwn fydd y cyflwyniad cyntaf o'i fath yn y Gymraeg, ac yn trafod ll锚n Cymru yn benodol. |
I study the Celtic-language literatures in general 鈥 and Welsh and Irish in particular. My interest in comparative methodology leads me also towards thinking in the context of the Slavic languages (especially Polish), and minoritised European cultures. In both my own research, and PhD supervision, I have a particular interest in work with a theoretical drive: my research (see details of publications, and conferences) is located between philology and the philosophy of language / art. I am particularly interested in fields such as prophecy, multilingualism, translation, poetics and aesthetics, and ecocriticism. Recently, my research has been moving in two main areas: the philosophy of the twentieth century (especially figures such as Martin Heidegger, Maurice Blanchot, Martin Buber, Jacques Derrida, J.R. Jones) and medieval Welsh literature. A central event that brings these threads together is Martin Buber's translation of the Four Branches of the Mabinogi (Die vier Zweige des Mabinogi) in 1914, and I have been looking at conceptual cross-fertilization between the Welsh legends and humanist-Hasidic traditions. I am currently looking specifically at concepts of time, temporality and historiography in medieval Welsh and Irish literature. This latest project explores not only features such as the deictic but also the ways in which literary forms and rhetorical tropes express conceptual (and aconceptual) experiences of time, place, timelessness and the utopian. I shall soon be publishing an accessible introduction to the Philosophy of Literature. This will be written in Welsh and focussed on the literature of Wales. |
