Why Bangor

I googled where the best place is to study marine biology and Bangor showed up. After having a look around the website, I instantly fell in love with the place.

The International Ambassador Scheme

International students always have it a bit harder to adjust as they mostly will not be able to come to open days and explore the university beforehand as well as sometimes struggle with the language. An international ambassador is a huge help to new students to adjust and help with the necessities as well as being someone they can talk to in their native language. When I started in Bangor, the ambassadors as well as the international student office supported me immensely and made my first few weeks here so much easier. I would like to help achieve this for future students.

The most difficult thing about being an International Student

The different language. So many different accents and slang is being mixed here, I had a lot of troubles understanding people at the beginning as the English taught in school did not cover a lot of it. 

The Course 

The best about any marine biology course is the field experience and knowledge from the professors. Most lecturers are active researchers and experts in their field, so you get the newest information about a topic. 

The Lecturers

Due to the university having their own research vessel and its location on Anglesey including the Menai Strait being a unique environment, the field experience gained is extremely exciting and valuable.

Clubs and Societies

I am part of the German society, endeavour society and the swimming club.  I enjoy hiking and exploring places in Snowdonia is one of the best weekend activities, as well as relaxing on the beaches on Anglesey, or just walking around Bangor up to the Roman Camp or the Pier!

The best thing about Bangor

Being close to the Ocean and Mountains at the same time.  When I leave I will miss the people.   Everyone I met here and made friends with is truly amazing.

Support from the University 

My personal tutor is an absolute star. If academic or personal problem, she always has an open ear for me and tries to help. The International Student Support office was also a huge help with anything related to going home, how to finance your year and the trips they organised were nice.

Advice for new International students

Don’t be nervous! I remember when I first arrived, I was not able to sleep a week prior. Everyone is going to be in the same boat as you and everyone wants to make friends. Just be yourself!

The Future

After my masters I would like to work in shark conservation and research somewhere warmer than the UK. But nothing is set in stone, I might stay a while.  I would recommend everyone to leave their home country and go to a university abroad (especially to Bangor), it is worth it! And I have not met anyone who regrets it.
