Cancer remains one of the major contributors to global morbidity and mortality, and incidence rates continue to rise steadily. At a local level, there are clear disparities in the incidence of a number of cancers across North Wales and the North West of England, relative to the rest of the UK. Therefore, cancer research is an important core theme at Â鶹´«Ã½¸ßÇå°æ.

Thanks to investment in cancer research, more and more cancer patients are making complete recoveries or are living longer, fuller lives with cancer. Sadly, every success story is counterbalanced by limited progress in the treatment of other aggressive, complex and intractable cancers. An urgent need remains for the development of novel strategies to treat patients with cancers that fail to respond to therapy, or which adapt to evade treatment.

North West Cancer Research is an independent charity dedicated to putting our region’s cancer needs first, funding pioneering research and education to tackle the cause, improve the care and find the cure for cancer.
In the North West Cancer Research Institute, housed in the North Wales Medical School at Â鶹´«Ã½¸ßÇå°æ, a number of teams are working from different angles to better understand the biology of cancer, and to use this knowledge to improve patient outcomes.

The central themes of our cancer research are:

1. Development of novel anti-cancer drugs
2. Understanding how cancers survive treatment
3. Identification and validation of novel cancer biomarkers
