On Wednesday, October 30, 2024, Dr. Cristiano Palego from the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering at 鶹ý delivered an engaging lecture titled “Bioelectric Approaches – Mid-Intensity Millimeter-Wave (30.5 GHz) to Improve Cancer Treatments and Regrow Tissues.” The event took place in the Main Lecture Theatre on Dean Street as part of the university's ongoing Engage lecture series.
Dr. Palego introduced bioelectric stimulation as an innovative method to enhance cancer treatments and tissue regeneration through targeted electrical pulses. He explained how different types of energy, including waves and fields, can influence cell behaviour, aiding in tissue growth and improving responses to therapies.
The lecture highlighted ongoing research utilizing 3D cancer organoids—lab-grown models that replicate the behaviour of actual tumours—to investigate the effects of energy delivery on cellular growth and drug efficacy. Dr. Palego emphasized the potential for these bioelectric techniques to pave the way for new therapies that integrate biology, physics, and engineering.
With a robust background in micro/nanotechnology and biomedical research, Dr. Palego has contributed significantly to the development of advanced technologies for cell stimulation and monitoring. His insights during the lecture provided attendees with a glimpse into the future of healthcare innovations aimed at improving patient outcomes.
