The Athena Swan Charter, launched in 2005, initially aimed to promote the careers of women in the fields of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) within higher education. It has since broadened its focus to encompass all academic departments and professional services, fostering inclusivity for individuals of all gender identities and tackling intersectional inequalities.
SHiLSS is in the process of establishing an Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Sustainability (EDIS) Committee to push through further equality initiatives within the School which will be representative of staff and students. The commitment to equality is boarder than just gender equality alone, but is intersectional in scope (class, gender, race, disability, culture) and also extends to matters of cultural and environmental sustainability.
Head of School, Professor Peter Shapely, commented: 鈥淥ur commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion is central to our research and teaching here at SHiLSS. This award reinforces our ongoing dedication to embedding these values among the School's staff and students; it's about embedding these values in the School's culture and that we go beyond gender and ethnicity to be genuinely all-inclusive. We extend our gratitude to all staff for their dedication to the application process, with special recognition to the members of the Self-Assessment Team and to Dr Corinna Patterson in particular, who led on this application鈥.
