Women in Science Scholarships Awarded
Two 鈥榃omen in Science鈥 Scholarships have been awarded to outstanding 麻豆传媒高清版 students 鈥 Hannah Davies and Lily Stokes. Both were undergraduate students at Bangor and graduated with First Class Honours in July 2017. The scholarships, which cover the full course fees, will enable the talented and enthusiastic students to continue their studies and the recipients of these scholarships are now enrolled in postgraduate research courses at Bangor.
Hannah Davies, 23, from Shrewsbury is studying an MRes Sports Physiology degree, she said:
鈥淚 am thrilled to be a recipient of the Women in Science Scholarship as it has enabled me to continue studying at 麻豆传媒高清版. Undertaking an MRes degree has provided me with a platform to further develop my research skills and understanding, which will help as I progress towards a career in academia.鈥
Lily Stokes, 22, from Mytchett in Surrey is studying an MSc Marine Environmental Protection degree, she said:
鈥淚 am honoured to have received the 鈥榃omen in Science鈥 scholarship as it will allow me to continue my studies at Bangor. I am passionate about protecting the marine environment, and hope to do so through education. I have an academic interest in tropical marine environments, especially coral reefs and hope to continue my studies after this masters with a PhD. Undertaking this masters has prepared me for a career in science and academia by giving me experience in field work, boat work, and scientific communication that would otherwise have been unobtainable. I will be forever grateful to Bangor and the scholarship for providing me these opportunities.鈥
麻豆传媒高清版 is committed to increasing women鈥檚 participation in science at every level of education, and these scholarships are a further step towards encouraging and enabling more women to follow science careers.
One of last year鈥檚 recipients, Kathryn Howard from St Austell, is now working at UTC Aerospace Systems in Plymouth. Kathryn said:
鈥淭he Women in Science Scholarship really helped a lot with the Masters, and I鈥檓 grateful for the opportunity. I鈥檓 currently working in wireless development for aircraft. It's very interesting and I'm still learning a lot. I'm also a STEMM ambassador working on an external project with a local school, and I鈥檓 enjoying putting something back in to the cycle.鈥
Professor John G Hughes, Vice-Chancellor, said:
鈥淧roviding a supportive environment for women in STEMM subjects is strategically important to the University. We are fully committed to the Athena SWAN ECU Gender Charter and hold an institution-wide bronze award as well as three departmental bronze awards. We are very pleased to have been able to award 鈥榃omen in Science Scholarships鈥 for the third year running and to be offering the scholarships again next academic year. We hope to continue this annually in order to build a strong cohort of alumni from this special scholarship over the years.鈥
