Welsh Food Advisory Appointment
Dr Philip Hollington, of the School of Natural Sciences, has been appointed to the Welsh Food Advisory Committee for a period of three years.
This Advisory Committee is chaired by Dr Ruth Hussey, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) Board member for Wales, who is appointed by the UK and Welsh Governments. The Committee comprises independent experts who are selected for their experience and practical knowledge of areas such as enforcement, food industry, agriculture, food-related science and consumer interests.
Dr Hussey said: 鈥業 am delighted that Dr Hollington has been appointed. Phil鈥檚 experience will be great asset to the Committee, and will better enable the Committee to provide advice to the FSA on food matters relating to Wales鈥�.
Prof Morag McDonald, Head of the School of Natural Sciences, said: 鈥樎槎勾礁咔灏� has a long history of consultancy, research and teaching on global aspects of agriculture, environment and food production and Phil will be representing this expertise on the Committee, along with his own expertise on food security and changing climates.鈥�
Dr Hollington began his career in Bangor with the Centre for Arid Zone Studies, and led several EU and UK projects to improve crop production, working closely with resource-poor farmers, NGOs, research institutions and universities in South Asia and Africa. More recently he developed the distance learning MSc Food Security in the Changing Environment, within which he leads modules focused on major global challenges. He also sits on the management board of the AgriFood Training Partnership (AFTP), a UK-wide collaboration of 7 universities providing advanced training to the UK鈥檚 agrifood and environment sectors.
