Overview
This module takes students through an introduction to the study of language from a linguistic perspective. Assuming no previous knowledge of the subject, the module covers a wide range of topics in the study of natural language, focusing on major concepts and key elements.
Areas covered include an overview of the questions that are central to the core components of Linguistics, including the nature of grammar and issues in morphology, phonetics and phonology. Some subdisciplines are also introduced and discussed, building a strong foundation for more advanced work in subsequent years.
The course provides an overview of and introduction to a wide range of topics in the study of natural language, including:
- What is language?
- Morphology: words and their structure.
- Phonetics and Phonology: language sounds and sound systems.
- Syntax: sentence structure.
- Semantics and Pragmatics: meaning and context.

- Adopt a Language project.
Other topics that may be covered will include a selection from:
- Language variation.
- Language change.
- Language acquisition.
- Language pathologies.
- Language and the brain.
Assessment Strategy
Threshold (D- to D+) Submitted work is adequate and shows an acceptable level of competence as follows: 1.Generally accurate but with omissions and errors.2.Assertions are made without clear supporting evidence or reasoning.3.Has structure but is lacking in clarity and therefore relies on the reader to make links and assumptions.4.Draws on a relatively narrow range of material.
Good (C- to B+) Submitted work is competent throughout and may be distinguished by superior style, approach and choice of supporting materials. It: 1.Demonstrates good or very good structure and logically developed arguments.2.Draws at least in parts on material that has been sourced and assessed as a result of independent study, or in a way unique to the student.3.Assertions are backed by evidence and sound reasoning.4.Accuracy and presentation in an appropriate academic style.
Excellent (A- to A*) Submitted work is of an outstanding quality and excellent in one or more of the following ways: 1.Has originality of exposition with the student鈥檚 own thinking being readily apparent.2.Provides clear evidence of extensive and relevant independent study.3.Arguments are laid down with clarity and provide the reader with successive stages of consideration to reach conclusions.

- Apply technical concepts and terminology to basic analysis of natural language data.
- Describe and apply core concepts in linguistics, including the study of the English language
- Identify and apply basic terminology and techniques for the description and analysis of natural language.

Description
Assignment 2: BlackBoard Test This is the final BlackBoard based exam for QXL-1110 Introduction to Language. The exam is worth 55% of the mark for the module and is accessible from any computer with internet access. It includes multiple choice, true/false, and open-ended questions. It assesses material covered during the whole semester, including the 'adopt-a-language' project.

Description
Assignment 1: Linguistic Analysis A BlackBoard based assignment accessible from any computer with internet access. This assignment focuses primarily on analysing some specific linguistic aspect as well as how to present an analysis in an essay format and assesses material covered during the first half of the semester.
