Overview
Topics included in this module are aligned with the curriculum of the Physician Associate PA programme. Key subjects covered include a history of public health and epidemiology, leading to current methodologies, and analysis of the evidence-base in health related research.
The module will cover types of research methods and the use and application of common statistical techniques.
Students will have the opportunity to explore genetic, environmental and social causes of illness, and to consider how these relate to principles of promoting health and preventing disease.
Assessment Strategy
-threshold -Category C (50% -59%)A threshold student should have a sound knowledge of the essential facts and key concepts of public health and epidemiology presented in the module. -good -Category B (60%-69%)A good student should have a thorough factual knowledge across all aspects of the module, and be able to detail examples where appropriate. The work presented is largely based on the lecture material with limited evidence of wider reading and critical analysis. -excellent -Category A (70% - 100%):An excellent student should have a thorough factual knowledge across all aspects of the module, and be able to detail examples where appropriate, supported by additional reading and knowledge drawn from other modules. For the higher 'A' marks, significant evidence of critical analysis and wider reading is essential.

- Demonstrate understanding of the role of promoting public health in disease prevention.
- Explain the importance of epidemiology in health and disease research.
- Review various types of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies and understand the value and application of statistical methods.
