Overview
This module aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the investigative methods of cellular pathology including classical techniques such as sample preparation and staining, immunohistochemical, and molecular techniques. It will provide an opportunity to become familiar with the appearance of a number of different types of cells, tissues, and organs, and the role of cellular and molecular pathology in the diagnosis, assessment and treatment of disease.
Please be advised that this module contains graphic images, descriptions, and discussions of various cellular and tissue abnormalities, diseases, and disorders. The content may include detailed visualisations of cells and tissues affected by infections, inflammation, cancer, and other pathological conditions. Additionally, the module may cover sensitive topics such as terminal illnesses and the impact of these conditions on patients and their families.
Note: This module serves as a core component of the accredited Biomedical Sciences BSc degree programmes offered by the School of Medical and Health Sciences. Students who lack the appropriate prerequisite background knowledge of human physiology and anatomy, may find the module content and assessments challenging.
The module will cover select areas of cellular pathology, reviewing key aspects of cell and molecular biology and classical and molecular techniques.
Assessment Strategy
EXCELLENT - Category A (70%-100%): Completed assessments present very accurate relevant taught material, integrated with numerous directed outside core text-reading and some self-researched information sources. Reports present very coherent and well-organised arguments that demonstrate excellent overall knowledge and understanding of all module material. Evidence of in-depth critical thinking and wider reading is important for grades of A+ and above.
GOOD - Category B (60%-69%): Completed assessments present overall good accurate relevant taught material, integrated with some directed core text outside-reading. Reports are well organised and structured, contain good coherent arguments, and demonstrate good overall knowledge and understanding of all module material.
ANOTHER LEVEL - Category C (50%-59%): Completed assessments present relevant accurate taught material but may lack explanation and context. Statements are largely correct but not further supported. Reports are sufficiently coherent and well presented to demonstrate a sound understanding of module material.
THRESHOLD - Category D (40%-49%): A threshold student should have a basic knowledge of the essential facts and key concepts presented in this module. Reports should demonstrate an ability to organise relevant lecture material into a coherent argument. The answer may contain errors and knowledge gaps.
Learning Outcomes
- Compare and contrast the roles of the common histological and histochemical methods for preparing human cells and tissues for microscopical study in cellular pathology.
- Evaluate the processes involved in the preparation of tissue sections and explain the purpose of each of these processes.
- Evaluate the role of cellular pathology in patient management.
- Evaluate the role of molecular pathology methods in pathology.
- Microscopically identify the cell and tissue types found in normal routine stained tissue sections.
