Overview
During the course of this module students will explore the following subjects:
- Why is history of medicine important?
- Medical ethics: Hippocrates to Henrietta Lacks.
- Evolution of anatomical understanding.
- Changing face of infection: Syphilis, Leprosy and Tuberculosis.
- Kill or cure: Medicine from the Paleolithic to now.
- Gender in Medicine.
- Spanish flu and its role in establishing modern public health systems.
By understanding both the historical and scientific context behind these issues, students who successfully complete this module will have developed a critical understanding that Medical Sciences is not a static field.
Assessment Strategy
-threshold -D- to D+A threshold student should have basic knowledge of the essential facts and key concepts presented in the module. The work incompletely covers the module material and there may be no argument and lack of examples & support.
-good -B- to B+A good student should have a thorough factual knowledge across all aspects of the module, and be able to detail examples where appropriate. The work shows a thorough understanding based on the presented material. The argument is logic and well supported.
-excellent -A- to AAn excellent student should have a thorough factual knowledge across all aspects of the module and be able to detailed examples where appropriate, supported by additional reading and knowledge drawn from other modules. Evidence of critical thinking and wider reading is essential for A+ and A marks.
Learning Outcomes
- Students will appreciate that scientific understanding is constantly evolving.
- Students will be able to describe the important steps which have led to modern medical and research ethics.
- Students will recognise that the human-disease relationship is constantly evolving.
