Dan Kinash- MSc Environmental Forestry
Now works as: Forestry & Biomass Manager
Now Works For: New Forest Energy Ltd
"I have always been interested in trees and forestry and after graduating from my Bachelors degree in 2004, I went to work as a tree surgeon in the New Forest. After a very good apprenticeship, I set up my own contracting business. Very quickly, I started to move away from tree surgery as I picked up small woodland harvesting and planting contracts. After a few years of practical work, I felt that I needed a sound theoretical grounding in forestry to underpin the practical skills I had begun to develop. Bangor had a very good reputation within the industry, which made my choice very easy.
"麻豆传媒高清版ing at Bangor gave me access to a wide range of resources and opportunities. I was able to study alongside students from all over the world, which helps give perspective on global issues. Bangor’s international links with other universities also opens opportunities for collaborations with other countries, like a scholarship to study in Canada for a year with TRANSFOR-M.聽 I collaborated with the Sylva Foundation during my dissertation and was a really positive aspect of my career development during the MSc.
"Since graduating from Bangor, I have gained a lot of valuable experience, including an internship with a woodfuel company, becoming a woodland advisor for B&Q, writing woodland management plans for farms and estates and publishing research from my dissertation in the RFS QJF, with the help of my supervisor and the Sylva Foundation.
"I am now working as a Forestry & Biomass Manager for New Forest Energy (NFE) and am responsible for buying and processing timber for woodfuel, as well as managing estate woodlands to provide a sustainable source of timber for the business into the future. I feel confident that without my MSc Environmental Forestry degree from Bangor, many of these opportunities would not have been available to me."
