School of Ocean Sciences
Module - Semester 1
20 credits
Module Organiser:
Mattias Green
Overview
This course introduces some of the underpinning techniques and concepts of marine science Topics covered include:
Mathematical methods
MATLAB computer programming
Oceanographic data analysis
Sediment transport processes
The course is taught through lectures, computer practicals and exercises
Assessment Strategy
Threshold -50 - 59% Complete all practical assignments, demonstrating a threshold level of knowledge and understanding in each case. There may be elements missing or wrongly understood, but the substantive ideas are correctly embedded.
Good -60 - 69% Threshold but with only rare errors or misperceptions, some strong elements of synthesis, critical analysis, and communication where that is part of the assessment, and ability to answer numerical questions logically.
Excellent -70%+ Good plus the ability to solve problems without being led, and wide evidence of further reading; excellent powers of synthesis and critical analysis; excellent communication skills where appropriate.
Learning Outcomes
- Students will be able to design and successfully execute functional, efficient computer programmes for marine science applications.
- Students will be able to evaluate and analyse oceanographic data, including those relating to sea-level and currents.
- Students will be able to identify and apply advanced mathematical approaches to solve a range of problems that may be encountered in marine science
- Students will be able to source, critically assess, and appraise information concerning current understanding of physical oceanographic processes, including sediment transport.
